Selection plan for the Flemish Farm Accountancy Data Network for the accounting year 2010. Methodology and results

Ester Van Broekhoven and Nicole Taragola (ILVO)

December 2009

The aim of the European Farm Accountancy Data Network (EU-FADN) is to collect accountancy data from farms for the determination of incomes and business analysis of agricultural holdings. All European Union Member States are under the obligation to provide data to the EU-FADN. For the Flemish Region and the Brussels Capital Region the total sample size has been established by the EU-FADN at 720 holdings. Data for the Flemish Region and the Brussels Capital Region are gathered via the Flemish Farm Accountancy Data Network (LMN), which is managed by the Division for Agricultural Policy Analysis (AMS) of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Flemish Government.

Before each accounting year, at the request of the European Commission, a selection plan is drawn up for the LMN. The sample is stratified according to clusters of types of farming and clusters of economic size classes. The selection plan is the result of a combination of optimal and proportional allocation. In this text the calculation of the selection plan for accounting year 2010 is discussed. As a result of the introduction of a new European typology based on Standard Output (SO) instead of Standard Gross Margin (SGM), there are significant differences between the selection sample plan for accounting year 2010 and the selection plan for previous accounting years. Also, from accounting year 2010 onwards, the selection plan is based on income per work unit of family members. The selection plans for previous accounting years were based on income per work unit of family members and paid labour forces.
